How the simple act of planting trees could be the secret to tackling the climate change problem...
A new study, recently released by the Swiss university ETH Zürich, claims that over one billion hectares of treeless land could be planted with 1.2 trillion native tree saplings in a bid to solve the climate change issue. If one billion hectares sounds like a lot to you - it is! In fact, it is approximately the equivalent size of the whole of the USA and China combined!
Apart from adding new trees to the planet, this action would also remove two thirds (205 gigatonnes) of all carbon dioxide emissions currently in the atmosphere.
This is huge news!
So How Does Planting Trees Help The Planet?
Well, in very simple terms, they help us breathe and they keep us cool...
When trees are cut down at the alarming rates that we see today, there are fewer trees left to absorb carbon emissions (that are rising). Trees play a vital role in helping to reduce the impact burning fossil fuels has has (and continues to have) on the environment.
Cities also benefit heavily from trees because they help to keep urban areas cooler and reduce levels of air and noise pollution.
You don't have to be a mathematician to see that the current deforestation rates combined with the increased carbon emission rates is not good news for the planet.
There are currently three trillion trees on the planet.
But there are 10 billion more trees cut down than are planted every year.
This major imbalance cannot continue...
Planting Trees Saves Animal And Plant Species Too
Additionally, the species of animals and plants that are affected or wiped out by this mass deforestation continues to be devastating. Complete ecosystems are being eliminated and this can have far reaching consequences for humankind.
Tropical rainforests are especially important as they host approximately 50% of known terrestrial species - on just 6% of the world’s land!
Trees also play a vital role in rainfall as they evaporate water from their leaves and provide shelter for animals.
Should Everyone Start Planting Trees?
Can it be as simple as everyone planting trees in their own back garden? While this can be beneficial for anyone to plant trees and enjoy them, the study estimates that we need the replanting to be on a massive scale - and this takes governments from around the world to be working together and making it happen.
There has been some progress on this front with initiatives such as The Bonn Challenge, a global effort to restore 150 million hectares of the world’s deforested and degraded land by 2020, and 350 million hectares by 2030.
This is a joint initiative between the government of Germany and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and endorsed by the New York Declaration on Forests of the 2014 UN Climate Summit.
But What About What I Can Do To Help?
You might be thinking that this is all well and good that big initiatives are out there and some traction has already been seen. But you want to know what you can personally do to make the impact that is needed?
Well, there IS something you can do!
How To Support Global Tree Planting Initiatives
You can support companies that provide tree planting donations whenever you buy something from them. There are some big corporate names out there, but there are also a growing number of smaller companies who are adopting this responsible way of doing business too.
Some businesses will ask if you want to donate to a tree planting initiative that they are working on, while others will donate a portion of their profits to reforestation projects.
Here are some resources for you to see which businesses are already part of the global tree planting initiative from One Tree Planted.
